My Late Drawings

Hello guys! How are you all doing? I'm writing this blog entry when I'm sick... cough! cough! AaahhhhAAACCHOOO! Yeah yeah, I got painful sore throat and colds so I don't work on my artworks for 3 days. It's so good to write here again.

Before I did my Alice artworks for Gallery Nucleus, I created & submitted my four graphite drawings to Outerspace Gallery, Manila in February 2010. I know, I didn't post my drawings on my blog for 5 months because they always postponed the gallery show. Finally, I have pulled them out. I figured it out that they have problems about their gallery so I understood them. Anyway, I'd love to share my drawings with all of you. I must admit that I love my Innocent drawings more than these late pieces, hehe.

I can't remember the exact measure, maybe 15" x 20"
I was greatly inspired by one of my favorite low-brow artists, Audrey Kawasaki. Nope, it's not for sale. This drawing belongs to my friend / famous Filipino low-brow artist, Luis Lorenzana. He wanted to trade artworks with me).

Sorry, it's not for sale again. I gave my big drawing to my dad. He wanted to show my drawing off to his doctors, friends and patients in his clinic, awww. (Eeee, did you see my new sexy black sandals? I love them!)

I made a small drawing for my sister Erica. She was upset because I was forgetful to buy a gift for her birthday. So I did my drawing for her and she was super happy. I told her "Promise me, silly Erica... Don't ever sell it to anyone!" Erica smiled and laughed mischievously then I rolled my eyes.

Currently, I was working on my next commission for my clients Vin & Shine (they are sweet couple, aww! I'm so excited about their September wedding!) Argh, I need to buy a canvas stretcher!

And surprise, surprise.... I received a Yoka custom toy. I really miss doing my Mellow toy. I can't believe... Yoka is bigger than Mellow! I can't wait to do it for my upcoming client Brenda. Are you all excited about my next custom toy, guys? Indeed, I'm intensely thrilled... *Mall squeals and she coughs badly. Her sister Erica shakes her head and pats Mall's back hardly when she still coughs....* Okay, ok, that's all folks, I need to sleep now. Goodnight and Sweetdreams!

Delight in Paper Chains

I must admit that I really enjoy doing every new challenge like I did my previous pieces about Alice in Wonderland & Twilight Zone themes. It's all good because a new challenge can improve my art skills so I love it. Past few months ago, Gallery1988 invited me to participate the group show Crazy4Cult 4, which is about tribute show to cult movies. I was intensely thrilled.

At first, it was so hard to choose either Edward Scissorhands or Willy Wonka. My family, friends and bloggers convinced me to prefer Edward and they voted vibrant and dark color scheme for my medium. So I accepted. I didn't remember about the story of Edward Scissorhands so I borrowed CDs from the video shop. I watched the full movie while doodling rough sketches.

I tried to do my new two challenges: bokeh or "out of focus" style / transparent effect / filter effect & more elaborated background which I saw Edward's creepy house. Before I started painting, I got idea about Edward's cutting paper cuts. I was thinking of myself, "Mall, why can't you imagine that he enjoys making creative paper cuts at his creepy house?" I imagined my picture... I felt sad and touched deeply that Edward showed his pure kindness to the three little birds ( my friend Patrick told me that three little birds reminds of Bob Marley's song so I didn't know that, haha! ) Anyway, enjoy viewing!

Yesshhh... my mission accomplished! If you're interested in buying my Edward piece, contact Gallery1988. Don't forget to visit Gallery1988 Los Angeles on July 9, Friday Night! I'm sure you guys will enjoy seeing many amazing artworks and artists there!

And other miscellaneous stuff... my original wood-burning piece, "Big Gossip" is SOLD! Still... I am sad, it's so hard to say goodbye to my favorite Big Gossip... I really miss my weird Japanese creatures, sigh. I'll definitely create more wood-burning pieces next time. Thank you so much, my wonderful art buyer Mary!

Nowadays, I work on my next art commission. Oh, crazy Liverpudian cityscapes... another new challenge! Well, I look so serious... Busy busy bee! (webcam pic)

Good news, I just realize now... My sister Erica and I record 1,012 sold in our Kirkus Shop since 2008! Hooray!

UPDATED: And I really enjoyed spending time with my first nephew Liam (my brother's baby son). I told him, "Liam, come here, kiss your auntie Mall... Because your Daddy, Mama and you will leave here for Manila. I'll miss you, my baby Liam." Thanks to my dearest mama, who captured this magical moment. I taught my mama how to use my Panasonic Lumix GF1 camera, hehe. When I have time, I'll teach my mama about ISO settings, manual focus, aperture, etc... Sigh, Liam always reduces my stress in my life and cheers me up!

Olivia & Oliver

Moshi, moshi! How you all doing? I would like to show my commissioned pieces for my client Nini from Hong Kong, who is so sweet, patient and kind. In May 2010 ( after I created my Innocent Girls drawings), I started doing my paintings for NIni. I love the way Nini explained a lot clearly what her adorable kids Olivia and Oliver requested about their interests / desires. For Olivia: dragon, magic, cute creatures and blue & green colors. For Oliver: his bestfriends ( turkey & chicken ), wood fire engine & blue/yellow colors... but sometimes he confuses about red & orange. Here are some photos and sketches. Gosh, Nini's kids are intensely adorable!

Click to view a full image.

My art preparation: two mixed media on canvas & one large wood board which Nini requested. Nope, I didn't make the wood boards by myself. I went to the wood working shop for making custom boards, it's so easy and not pricey. Then I stretched and primed a thick canvas by myself... yeah, I got my few wounds on my fingers 'coz of stretching. I really miss stretching canvas! Honestly, I think the last time I stretched a canvas was in 2005 or 2006? Whoa, it's so long.... Next time, I should buy a stretcher. In my opinion, I really don't like to buy ready-made canvas boards at the art store because they look like low-quality materials. I always prefer custom high quality materials.

Anyway, enjoy viewing!

Hope you guys enjoy my art! Nini still plans to commission me more, but I hold on. I should finish other commissions before the deadlines! Don't worry Nini, I will let you know when I'll be ready to make more commissioned pieces later. Thank you so much for everything, Nini! Please give my big kisses and hugs to Olivia & Oliver from me!

Coming up. My art buyers wanted me to post my Edward Scissorhands painting before G1988 Los Angeles will launch the Crazy4Cult group show on July 9. Let's see, I'll try to post it before the opening gallery! Good night, I need to sleep now!
